On March 18, 1991, the Viennese scientist Johann Niederpointner found a large hoard of Iron Age jewellery at the foot of the Dachstein Glacier. He publicised his discovery, but its importance went unrecognised. Niederpointner disappeared under mysterious circumstances from his accommodations at Obertraun and has not been seen since.
It was not until June 2005 Niederpointner’s find was rediscovered. 80 pieces of jewellery made of an off-white metal, some of remarkable size and in very good condition. Iron Age origins seemed likely, even if the sizable dimensions and weight lend some of the ar- tefacts a contemporary look and feel.
The material puzzled the scientists. The objects were made of gallium. This metal melts at a temperature of just under 30 degrees centigrade. The jewellery had surely never been worn. What purpose did it serve then?

INCREDIBLE STRANGE OBJECT (I.S.O.)– also unaffiliated foreign object; an object that cannot be identified and classified immediately. Someone made it; but for what purpose? Its former user may have known; its maker certainly would have. Lacking any acquaintance with its application and therefore unaware of its purpose, the finder is mystified and intrigued by this unknown entity so close at hand. Perhaps its details suggest a technical function – or a ritual animus? The desire to solve the puzzle runs deep.
